Ireland's public health service is short of nurses, and it is actively recruiting from abroad. The Health Service Executive (HSE), which runs Ireland's public hospitals and community services, has an open rolling campaign for permanent Staff Nurse (Mental Health) posts in the Mid West region, covering Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary. The campaign is open to all applicants and closes on 31 December 2026. On top of that, an official HSE circular sets out a relocation package of up to €4,710 for candidates moving from outside the EU, and lists visa fees among the initial costs the HSE can pay on the candidate's behalf. The role focuses on holistic, person-centred care, promoting service users' independence and improving their quality of life in mental health services. Work permit and visa route The HSE's international recruitment page explains that EEA, UK and Swiss citizens do not need a permit. Applicants from outside these countries, it says, *"may well qualify for a Critical Skills Employment Permit"* because many healthcare jobs are in high demand. The same page notes that this permit lets your immediate family live in Ireland, and lets your spouse or partner work without a separate permit. You will also need an entry visa if your nationality requires one. Before you can work, you must also register with Ireland's nursing regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). The HSE relocation package (HR Circular 004/2026) HSE HR Circular 004/2026, dated 13 February 2026 and effective from 9 February 2026, sets out these allowances for candidates moving from outside the EU: - Accommodation: up to €3,910 for the first 3 months (91 days) - Flights or ferry: up to €800 - Total: up to €4,710, paid against receipts The circular adds that the following initial costs are payable on behalf of the candidate: regulatory body registration fees, visa fees, aptitude test fees, language testing and examinations, recognition fees and the Atypical Working Scheme visa fee. The package applies to permanent posts, or temporary posts of at least two years. Important condition: the circular says that when a candidate is recruited through a local recruitment office outside the national panel contracts, paying the package and these initial costs is at the discretion of the hiring service. This campaign is run by the HSE Mid West office. Ask the recruiter in writing whether the package and visa fees apply to your offer before you rely on them. How to apply 1. Tips for international nurses - Get your documents ready: nursing degree transcripts, registration certificates, experience letters and an English test result if NMBI asks for one. - Mental health nursing is a specialist register in Ireland. Check which NMBI division your qualification fits before you apply. - Keep receipts. Relocation allowances are paid only against receipts, and accommodation deposits are not refunded. - Think long term. The package is linked to posts of two years or more. Scam warning The HSE posts its vacancies free on about.hse.ie and works with approved recruitment partners. Never pay a private "agent" to secure an HSE nursing job, and never send money for a "visa guarantee". If anyone asks you for an upfront payment, check directly with the HSE before doing anything.
