Canada's trucking industry keeps posting jobs marked "LMIA requested" on the government's Job Bank, and many people abroad see those words and assume the job comes with a visa. One current example is a large one: Sysco Central Ontario is advertising 20 long-haul truck driver vacancies in Peterborough, Ontario, at $37.28 an hour. In this post we look at the job itself and explain clearly what "LMIA requested" does and does not mean, so you can decide whether it is right for you. Job details at a glance - Employer: Sysco Central Ontario (posted on Job Bank by a licensed third party for the employer) - Job title: Long haul truck driver (NOC 73300) - Location: 65 Elmdale Road, Peterborough, Ontario K9J 0G5 - Salary: $37.28 per hour, 40 hours per week - Terms: Permanent, full-time; shifts can include early morning, day, evening, night and weekends - Vacancies: 20 - Experience: No experience (will train), though the licences below are required - Benefits: dental, health care and disability benefits, plus a pension plan - Advertised until: 28 October 2026 - Job Bank number: 3670563 For context, Job Bank lists the median wage for long-haul truck drivers in the Muskoka–Kawarthas region at $25.00 an hour, so this offer sits well above the local median. Paperwork such as bills of lading, logbooks, inspection reports and trans-border documents is part of the job. What "LMIA requested" really means A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is the process a Canadian employer uses to show that no Canadian worker is available, before it can hire a temporary foreign worker. Job Bank says that for this job, the employer has applied for an LMIA and the application is still under review. However, the same official page also says who can apply right now: - Canadian citizens - Permanent residents of Canada - Temporary residents of Canada with a valid work permit It adds: do not apply if you are not authorised to work in Canada; the employer will not respond. The posting also notes that relocation costs are not covered by the employer. In simple words, this specific listing is realistic for people who are already in Canada with work rights, such as current work-permit holders. It is not an open invitation to apply from overseas. How to apply (if you are eligible) 1. Read the full official posting: Long haul truck driver – Peterborough, ON – Job Bank (https://www.jobbank.gc.ca/jobsearch/jobposting/50285659). 2. Apply through the method shown on Job Bank before 28 October 2026. 3. Include copies of your AZ licence, air brake endorsement and a recent driver's abstract with your CV. Tips for drivers planning a Canada move - Get licensed the right way. Ontario AZ licences require a mandatory entry-level training course and road test; foreign licences are not automatically accepted. - Use Job Bank's foreign-worker filter. Job Bank has a "Temporary Foreign Workers" search that shows employers who requested LMIAs. Always read the "Who can apply" section on each posting. - Look at official immigration programs. Information on work permits and permanent residence is only on the Government of Canada's official IRCC website. - Keep records. Employment letters, payslips and driving records help with both jobs and immigration applications. Scam warning In Canada, it is illegal for employers to charge workers for an LMIA, and you should never pay anyone to "buy" an LMIA or a job offer. Fake agents often promise "LMIA jobs" for thousands of dollars. Report suspicious offers, and remember that Job Bank and IRCC never ask you to send money to a private person.
