Bitcoin Treasury Companies: What Strategy's Latest Buy Shows

Public companies that hold bitcoin as a core treasury asset have become one of the most-watched forces in crypto. Their weekly purchase announcements can move headlines, and sometimes sentiment. This week's updates, released Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, show an interesting split: the largest holder, Strategy, bought only a small amount of bitcoin, while smaller rivals kept buying at a faster clip. Here is what bitcoin treasury companies are doing, how they raise the money, and the risks worth understanding before you read too much into their moves. Strategy Buys 267 Bitcoin and Expands a Buyback Michael Saylor's Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, acquired 267 bitcoin last week, bringing its total holdings to 848,517 coins, according to CoinDesk. The more notable part of the announcement involved its preferred stock. Strategy bought back another $193 million of its high-yielding preferred shares, known as STRC, bringing total buybacks to nearly $2 billion, and increased the size of the repurchase program to $3 billion from $2 billion. CoinDesk explained the background: the buyback program began over the summer after STRC fell nearly to $70, well below its $100 par value. In recent weeks, it has traded mostly above $98, and it was up 1.3% to $98.99 on Monday. The security carries a 12% dividend yield, and Strategy has less than $9 billion of it issued, CoinDesk said. Some critics on social media have questioned whether that money would be better spent buying more bitcoin. Saylor responded on Monday: "You don't build a market worth trillions without investing billions." Strive and Metaplanet Keep Accumulating Not every treasury company slowed down. Strive, led by Matt Cole, added 1,223 bitcoin last week for a total of 36,818, per CoinDesk. The company expects about $600 million in additional buying power later this week when proceeds from its SATA preferred stock offering arrive. SATA itself dipped to $96.83 during last week's market panic after spending several weeks at or above $100 par. Japan's Metaplanet also moved closer to a U.S. presence. CoinDesk reported that shareholders of Super League approved Metaplanet's proposed takeover, which paves the way for a rebrand to Superplanet, a U.S.-listed bitcoin treasury platform. At closing, Metaplanet will contribute 2,100 BTC, out of its roughly 44,000 BTC, plus $2.5 million for about 93.7% ownership, with its shares locked up for five years. The trend extends beyond bitcoin. Ethereum-focused Bitmine bought another 12,535 ETH last week and now holds 6.04 million ETH, according to CoinDesk. How Bitcoin Treasury Companies Raise Money These companies generally fund purchases by selling securities to investors, rather than from operating profits alone. Common tools include: - Common stock sales, which raise cash but can dilute existing shareholders. - Preferred stock, such as Strategy's STRC or Strive's SATA, which pays a fixed dividend and usually ranks ahead of common shares. - Convertible bonds, which are debt that can turn into stock later. When a company's preferred shares trade near par value, issuing more is an efficient way to raise money. When they fall below par, as STRC and SATA did during recent selloffs, issuing becomes more expensive. That helps explain why Strategy, per CoinDesk's analysis, is likely to keep buying back preferred shares rather than issuing them to buy more bitcoin while STRC trades below $100. The Risks Investors Should Understand Treasury strategies amplify bitcoin exposure, and that cuts both ways. Key risks include: - Price risk. If bitcoin falls, the value of the company's main asset falls too, while dividend and interest obligations stay the same. - Funding risk. These models depend on capital markets staying open. When preferred shares drop below par, raising new money gets harder. - Dilution. Issuing new common stock can reduce each shareholder's slice, even if total bitcoin holdings grow. - Concentration. A company holding hundreds of thousands of coins is a large, visible market participant whose decisions get outsized attention. On Monday, bitcoin was trading near $82,000, according to CoinDesk, well below its October 2025 peak of $126,198.07 cited by Yahoo Finance. That gap is a reminder that treasury holders are exposed to the same volatility as everyone else. What It Means for Everyday Investors Weekly purchase announcements are a useful window into institutional demand, but they are not a signal to buy or sell. A small purchase by Strategy does not necessarily mean the company is less committed, just as a large purchase does not guarantee higher prices. If you own shares of a treasury company, read its filings to understand how it funds purchases, what it owes to preferred holders, and how much dilution has occurred.
